John Boyer is Martin A. Ryerson distinguished professor in the department of History and senior advisor to the President’s Office of the University of Chicago. He got his PhD degree from the Department of History at the University of Chicago. From 1991 to 2023, he was Dean of the College of the University, and assumed the post for the longest time in the history of the University.
Professor Boyer’s research covered the history of the University of Chicago since the time it was established. His book The University of Chicago: A History was first published by the University of Chicago Press in 2015, and was translated into Chinese in 2018. He is deeply involved in the education reform and administration of the University, but also has made huge impact to the field of higher education through his research work. This lecture will focus on the status of the liberal arts in American researchuniversities. Using the case of University of Chicago as the best example, Professor Boyer will analyze the relationship between liberal arts teaching and the development of American universities over the history and share his opinion on the future of liberal education.
